Materials Steel, aluminum, wood, plastic
Weight 40 lbs
Sparks/Coolant None (cold-cut technology)

In-Depth Review

Evolution's multi-material technology is genuinely impressive. One blade cuts steel, aluminum, and wood — without changing blades, without coolant, and without sparks. The cuts on mild steel come out burr-free and cool to the touch, which is almost unbelievable until you see it.

The 15-amp motor handles up to 4-3/4" round stock. We tested it on angle iron, square tube, 2x4s, and aluminum extrusion — clean cuts every time. For fabrication shops and jobsites where you cut multiple materials daily, this eliminates the need for multiple saws.

Best for: Metal fabrication, mixed-material jobsites, and shops that cut steel, aluminum, and wood regularly.

The Milwaukee 2734-20 Sliding Compound delivers clean, accurate cuts right out of the box. The stock blade handles dimensional lumber and trim with ease, producing smooth crosscuts that need minimal sanding. The miter detents click positively at common angles and the fence supports tall crown molding.

We were impressed with the motor's ability to maintain speed through hardwoods without bogging. The dust bag captures roughly 75% of the debris — not perfect, but better than most. For the money, this is a capable saw that handles everything a framing or trim crew needs daily.

In-Depth Review

Okay, so it’s not technically a chop saw (more on that here) but it’s one heck of a saw if you plan on doing more than just a few simple cuts. We won’t discuss Milwaukee as a brand because we’ll assume you already know how great their reputation is. But we will discuss this M18 Fuel Chop Saw which is an absolute powerhouse.

The first thing to note about this miter saw is that it’s one of the best portable chop saws on the market. Weighing only 45 lbs., it’s light enough that you can carry it like a lunch box with its built-in handles on the top and side. Powered by a high-demand 18V battery (sold separately), it’s cordless and can cut up to 400 cuts before needing to be recharged.

Although that’s a lot of cuts, you might want to carry an extra battery pack around just in case, since there’s no option for an adapter to plug the saw in. There’s no lack of power with this saw and many cannot tell the difference between this cordless miter saw and a corded miter saw. Its brushless motor provides up to 4,000 RPMs and cuts through just about anything you can throw at it.

Buying Guide

What to look for before you buy

Blade Size & RPM

14-inch blades are standard for most chop saws. Higher RPM delivers faster cuts but generates more heat. For metal cutting, lower RPM with carbide-tipped blades produce cooler, cleaner cuts than abrasive wheels.

Cutting Capacity

Check the maximum cutting depth and width. A 14-inch saw typically cuts up to 5 inches deep. If you regularly cut large stock, wide angle iron, or structural steel, make sure the saw can handle the dimensions.

Our Verdict

The Milwaukee 2734-20 Sliding Compound is our top pick for versatility. The Evolution EVOSAW380 is the best metal-cutting chop saw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about power tools

What is the difference between a chop saw and a miter saw?
A chop saw cuts straight 90-degree cuts only, typically on metal. A miter saw pivots to cut angles and bevels, which is essential for trim, framing, and finish carpentry.
Can a chop saw cut metal and wood?
Multi-material chop saws like the Evolution EVOSAW380 can cut steel, aluminum, and wood with the same blade. Standard abrasive chop saws should only be used on metal.
